Thong Tai

Asian elephant (Elephas maximus)

Female, born 1990

Arrived at Artis on November 28, 2003.

Just before she moved From Munster (Gemany) to Amsterdam Thong Tai visited Alexander of Rotterdam Zoo. Everyone was delighted when she came pregnant to Artis, because this zoo had never experienced the joy of seeing the birth of an elephant!

The zoo needed an experienced mother to help Thong Tai with the labor and to assist with weening the baby. At that time, Win Thida was causing problems in Arnhem and both zoos agreed to send her to Amsterdam.

On August 2, 2005, about 10:20 PM, Yindee was born after a very smooth delivery. The new mother is getting  unexpecting help: Nikolai, the bull, enjoys babysitting! And so, while Thong Tai is telling the latest gossip to Win Thida the gentle bull is playing with her daughter. Even when Nikolai  takes Yindee out of Thong Tai's sight, she doesn't panic. After a while she calmly walks to the two to see what's going on. Nikolai went to Hannover Zoo in 2008.

The members of this young herd are becoming close friends with one another and that's very hopeful for the future. For instance, the first time Thong Tai brought Yindee outside was to greet Win Thida. This was a good sign of friendship and respect.

On January 10, 2009, Thong Tai got a son. Unfortunatley he was 2.5 months premature and died the next day.
