Yindee

Asian elephant (Elephas maximus)

Female, born August 2, 2005 in Amsterdam.

Her name means: Joy, Welcome, Congratulations.

Yindee is the first elephant born in Artis. At 10:22 PM she first saw the light of day with the loud trumpeting of the other elephants. A very proud Thong Tai carefully began to tough her daughter and tried to make her stand. In the wild it is very important for baby elephants to walk immediately after birth because they are very vulnerable.

After 10 minutes Yindee stood up and was ready to start exploring the world. The next day she mursed, an important event for mother and child.

Yindee does what every baby does: drinks, sleeps, plays, drinks, sleeps; her daily routine. Shortly after Yindee went outside for the first time, she met a new friend: Nikolai. This bull loves to play with her, and they delight in running and playing throughout the enclosure. Yindee has also discovered another animal: birds. They are fun to chase!
