Calimero
African elephant (Loxodonta africana)
Bull, born in 1978 in Zimbabwe
Arrived on April 28, 2004 at Safari Beekse Bergen
Calimero is, as every other elephant bull, not a member of the herd. For mating a bull must be dominant to the females, and so is Calimero. As soon as he is together with the herd, he shows that he is the boss! But when he is alone in his own enclosure, Calimero is a very friendly bull.
He came from Zimbabwe to the zoo of Gelsenkirchen (Germany), from which he moved to Rome on June 5, 1982. After spending four years in Basel Zoo (Switzerland), Calimero finally came to Beekse Bergen on April 28, 2004
