Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) Female Lived at the zoo from 1907 until the begin of 1919 Not much is known about Besty. She died in 1919. On this photo, Betsy performed as a nurse. Ridiculous of course. But in those days the people liked it. Notice the beautiful elephanthouse. As usual, in the 19th century, build in oriental style. |

Another photo of Betsy The keeper is the same person as the one on the first photo. Notice the curved fence: the outside area was nothing more then a half round against the building with the stables. In those days the elephants were used for rides, so the small enclosure was not so terrible as it seems. |
