Barbara came to Emmen on July 3, 1961 to replace Katinka who died earlier that year. She was a hard to handle elephant. She did not care about the electrical wire fence, and escaped many times. The zoo looked for another enclosure with heavy bars and find it in Amsterdam.

She was transported to Amsterdam on March 17, 1966, and she died there on April 28, 1994.
