Katinka

 

  Asian elephant (Elephas maximus)

Female, born circa 1933 in Myanmar (Burma), died on July 3, 1961 in Emmen.

Arrival in Emmen: May 31, 1939

Katinka was also called 'Tinka/Tinca'.

Katinka came together with Sheila to Emmen. Both were six years old. First elephant Oelie did not had much space in her enclosure, the two newcomers had to share the same one. After the Second World War Emmen build a new 'pachyderm house'. The enclosure had an electrial wire fence. Emmen was the first zoo who used this for elephants!

Katinka was suffering from a typical zoo-elephant related illness: atritis. Because she was suffering from to much pain she was shot on July 3, 1961.
