Radza

  Asian elephant (Elephant maximus)

Male, born 1966 at Mysore (India)

Arrived in Emmen on October 14, 2003

Radza is the giant amongst the giants. He looks impressive with a height of 3.15 meters, his two enormous tusks, and his weight of 7200 kilograms. He is a very friendly bull and has caused no problems except when the keepers tried to let him go into his own separate stable. Radza was unwilling to go inside in spite of whatever the keepers tried. Finally, they let him stay with the herd. Even during the births of the last two babies, Radza was present, without any troubles.

A bull never interfers with the daily routine of a herd and this is true of Radza. You can see him calmly eating most of the time or, more often, see him lying down for a nap. He sticks the point of his tusk in the sand so he can lie down. This is something he can't do on the floor of the elephant house.

In Emmen Zoo, Radza has two sons: Myo Set Kaung and Unt Bwe.
